19th Century oak pedestal desk with inset handles

Price: £

Description: This is a fine example of an oak pedestal desk (Circa 1890) that will compliment a period or contemporary interior. Its design, symmetry and turned inset handles make this twin sided desk particularly pleasing. Having false drawers and cupboards to its reverse makes it a perfect choice if you are looking for a focal point within the center of your room, as it looks attractive from all angles. Equally, because the inverted front and back are very shallow it will happily sit against a wall without looking out of place. This desk has another design feature - when the middle drawer is pushed home the rest of the drawers are automatically locked (the middle drawer can then be locked in the traditional manner if needed). And in reverse, if you pull open the middle drawer by an inch you can regain access to any of the others. This desk has been sensitively and professionally restored, its surface is full grained with a warm pleasing colour. Understandably, we had to replace the original leathered writing surface, because it was too worn after 140 years of use. We chose a fine quality hide as a replacement, our specialist then hand coloured the surface to compliment the oak, before decorating the borders with tooling and gold leaf. Overall measurements - 137 cm wide x 83 cm deep x 76 cm high Measurements of the knee-hole - 55.5 cm wide x 61.3 cm high
