Late 19th Century collectors’ chest in walnut & satin birch.

Price: £1150.00

Description: ‘At first sight of this fine late 19th Century collector's chest, my gaze was inexplicably held and the child in me drawn towards its twelve drawers; each of its original cast and finely detailed brass handles had to be duly pulled to discover what lay inside.’ Chests with a multitude of drawers always attract both tiny and larger hands but this, probably unique, chest is also aesthetically pleasing, especially now after its been sensitively restored. A blend of solid walnut and satin birch has been used very cleverly to extenuate the beauty of the timber. Originally the tonal difference would have been pronounced but after 130 years the whole effect is warm, subtle and very appealing. The drawers have been constructed using solid walnut with hand-cut dovetail joints, and the sides have been enhanced with raised walnut panels framed in satin birch. Its walnut top is also framed in the same manner, but this time the whole surface is flush with mitred joints to each corner. At the bottom left and right of its hardwood panelled back, sections have been skilfully removed so the cabinet sat neatly against the skirting board. A pleasing sign of its unique status; however, these two original strips of satin birch can easily be removed and supplied separately if so desired. The internal measurements of each drawer are 23.2 cm wide x 6.5 cm deep x 27 cm long) ‘A lovely piece of antique furniture, which, if positioned against a wall, and next to a sofa, would make an attractive and practical support for a decorative reading lamp'
