Carolean walnut side chairs (2) – Circa 1670 – 90

Price: £

Description: These two Carolean (Restoration) caned walnut side chairs have come from a private collection and will greatly enhance a period setting . The carved frames and early caning both retain an appealing depth of colour commensurate with their age - the Carolean period was the last of the three Jacobean styles, it was heavily influenced by the French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian, but was lighter in construction, with more elaborate carving than previous periods. They have been sensitively restored in the past and are stable with no major replacements. The benefit of using walnut, apart from its attractive appearance, was the ease at which it could be carved. However, combine 300 + years of use, both as a side chair and as a side dish for walnut loving woodworm (they left long ago), together with those lighter elegant walnut frames, and you have two stable, highly decorative, but not particularly usable early English chairs full of character and history. The measurements for the slightly larger chair are - 124.5 cm (high) x 48 (deep) x 44 (wide)
