A sycamore, enclosed chest of drawers (Circa 1930)

Price: £425.00

Description: This sycamore enclosed chest of drawers is quite possibly unique and dates to a period which is a particular favourite of mine. A time when skilled cabinet making and thoughtful design was not only the preserve of household names such as Heals and Maples, but was widely carried out as a pastime. This small single door cabinet has been decorated with well chosen quarter sawn oak veneer, with its appealing medullary rays running through the grain. It is fastened by a good quality chrome plated lock and key. The chrome compliments the sycamore that lines the reverse of the door and decorates the front of each of its ten drawers. The hand-made dovetailed drawers are constructed with mahogany and glide smoothly on a system of tongue and grooves. The drawers that were housed in many of the earliest chests were supported in this way. The oak cabinet is finished on all sides so it can sit independently, next to a sofa or armchair for example. We have traditionally restored the exterior of the cabinet, but the interior, which has been protected, is still in good original condition. The horizontal marks to the back of the chest are natural decorative striations. A distinctive and practical enclosed chest. Measurements - 76 cm high x 41 cm wide x 32 cm deep
