An original Shaker rocking chair (Circa 1890)
Price: £385.00
Description: This highly distinctive shaker rocking chair formed part of a wonderful collection of decorative objects that were gathered together by two artists who lived and worked in New York during the 1950s. The shaker style of furniture design is well-known and well-documented, so all I will add is, "their less is more philosophy is as relevant today as it was in the second half of the 19th Century." The simplicity of this rocking chair is so appealing, it's difficult not to sit and while away a good part of your day. Normally, we would follow the long-held tradition of re-rushing a shaker chair. However, this example has been upholstered many times over its lifespan, possibly, looking at the very old sacking (see image) we found underneath the previous fabric, from the day of its conception. So, we decided to follow suit, and re-upholster the seat in a simple, but inviting good-quality Bute fabric. This lovely chair is in good condition, so much so, the surface of the frame just required some gentle enriching - a further indication of the craftsmanship within the shaker movement. Measurements - 89 cm high x 63 cm deep x 50 cm wide.
