A fine 19th Century gilt pier mirror

Price: £

Description:

This charming and decorative pier mirror dates to the first half of the 19th Century and is a particularly nice example. The mirror plate appears to be original, as is the well-executed floral panel, painted in reverse and sitting beneath the decorated cavetto cornice. As you can see the gilded frame is in good condition, with only minor crazing and rubbing commensurate with its age. The backboards to the reverse of the mirror and the brads (delicate nails) that secure them all look to be of good age. Traditionally pier mirrors were designed to brighten a room and hung on the wall between two windows (pier) - they can still be seen in situ in many Georgian country houses. However, this mirror is small and attractive enough to enhance most settings. Measurements - 68 cm x 44 cm
