A fine quality mahogany pedestal desk

Price: £2650.00

Description: This mahogany pedestal desk was made to the highest standard during the second half of the 19th Century. You can see by looking through the accompanying images, the artisans who designed and made this desk wanted the mahogany to be the focus of attention, rather than unnecessary embellishments. That's not to say there isn't any fine detailing, there is .... the fine stop chamfering that runs vertically along the corners of each pedestal greatly increases the aesthetic appeal of the desk. They extensively used fiddle-back mahogany (natural vertical striations/streaks running through the grain) because its reflective qualities are almost jewell-like, however, there needs to be a good depth of polish if the surface is really going to sing, and the surface of this desk has a fine voice! For ease of transport, it separates into three parts, also, when delivered and put together, it stands at the recommended working height and has a good amount of legroom (61 cm from floor to underside of middle drawer). As you would expect from a pedestal desk of this quality, all that is hidden from sight has been made to the same exacting standard as its exterior, from the finely constructed mahogany draw linings, that have been skillfully joined using hand-cut dovetails to the top-quality original locks, that are all working (keys supplied). As you expect the original leathered writing surface, after 140 years of use, needed replacing, so after we restored the desk to its present showroom state, we treated it to a top-quality hand-dyed and traditionally decorated hide. Measurements - 81 cm deep x 75.5 cm high x 135 cm wide.
