A fine George III mahogany chest of drawers

Price: £875.00

Description: Antique chests of drawers are numerous, but good original Georgian examples, like this well-proportioned 18th-century mahogany chest, are becoming scarcer. This is because they are used daily, and as such, can suffer from the rigors of time and atmospheric change. Shrinkage to their sides causing vertical cracks, is common, as is wear and tear to the chest's interior and feet. Also, the original elegant design can be lost, through changes in fashion - for example, handles are often replaced leaving unsightly witness marks. So, finding this lovely 250-year-old chest of drawers, that has all of its original brass swan neck handles still in place, a full set of period steel locks, and that stands at the right height, on its original elegant bracket feet is rather remarkable. Even more so, when you take into consideration, that there are no cracks in the carcass, and as you can see from the images, it has retained a very pleasing surface colour. The last photograph is of the right-hand side of the top of the chest. It shows the silhouette of several coins, which must have been left on the surface for a considerable time by its last owner. Disguising these would spoil the surface colour, and in our opinion, they add interest and are all part of its history. We have sensitively enhanced this rare survivor, and it's now ready to be used and enjoyed.  Measurements 96 cm wide x 96 cm high x 53 cm deep.
