19th Century campaign chest of drawers made from cedar wood.

Price: £2450.00

Description: There is always a certain amount of intrigue and mystique attached to pieces of campaign furniture especially chests of drawers which would have been used on a day-to-day basis by their owner. If only they could relay what they saw and where they had been, we wouldn't have to use our imaginations to fill in the blanks. So, we were delighted to acquire, from a private source, a 19th-century example made from cedar, which had retained all its original brass fittings, and removable turned feet. Even though campaign chests are fairly scarce, we have bought and sold several made from teak, mahogany and camphor over the years, but never, until now, from cedar. As you can see from the images, we have fully restored the chest to a high standard - enhancing the wild attractive grain of the cedar by imparting a mellow pleasing tone to its surface. A similar technique was used to finish the chest back in the 19th Century. All but one of the locks are original (the lock to the top-right-hand drawer was missing). This is quite often the case as it would have been a more intricate lock, designed to keep the contents of the drawer, such as a revolver or maps, secure. To pay homage to the original we have added a two-pin lock of a similar age. All the locks have been serviced and keys cut. Apart from their military and historical interest, the popularity of campaign chests stems from their knack for enhancing both period and contemporary interiors. Measurements 104 cm high x 91.5 cm wide x 45 cm deep
