A fine antique convex mirror (original condition – Circa 1830)
Price: £875.00
Description: I came across this English 1830s convex mirror whilst walking through an antique fair. I have encountered a few on my travels but this example needed a closer investigation. What made me decide to purchase it? It was a culmination of things that, when combined, elevated this particular convex mirror to a rarely seen level. It is a large and impressive mirror of great colour and originality. After two hundred years of wonderful neglect, it has acquired an attractive patina to its gilded surface. As you expect, there are minor historical condition issues but they pale in significance when compared with its overall decorative appeal. I find convex mirrors add a focal point to an interior and regularly draw admiration and interest from visitors. The depth stated below is for the main gilded circular frame, however, the outstretched eagle's wings are approximately 20 cm deep. The convex glass mirror was invented in Venice, in around 1300, and by the late fourteenth century, they could be found in Northern Europe. You can see a convex mirror in the background of " The Arnolfini Wedding", which was painted by the Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck in 1434. By the Eighteenth century, they were at the height of fashion. Measurements - 100 cm high x 60 cm wide x 8 cm deep.
