A late 19th century oak swivel desk chair
Price: £595.00
Description: The distinctive design of this comfortable swivel desk chair can be attributed to the London cabinet-making firm of James Shoolbred & Company. Dating to the late 19th Century, it fits neatly into the period when Shoobred's opened the city's first large department store on Tottenham Court Road, in which it could display its range of high-quality furniture. As you can see from the images, the accentuated and pleasing shape formed by the chair legs, along with the crisp decorative carving to the back shows that the cabinet maker was not so restricted by time and budgetary constraints, and was free to use larger and better cuts of timber. Swivel desk chairs are often supported by brass or porcelain castors, however, this example has never had them fitted, which must have helped the cabinet maker in his quest to produce an altogether more attractive revolving desk chair. This example retains a warm appealing colour and is in excellent original condition, for this reason, it only required a minimal amount of sensitive restoration. Its attractive green leather-covered seat appears to be approximately 50 - 70 years old and is also in good condition. Measurements - 62cm wide x 85 cm high x 50 cm deep
