Pair of carved limewood mermaid wall mounted occasional tables

Price: £950.00

Description: This rare and finely carved pair of 19th Century limewood wall mounted occasional tables once belonged to a client’s grandmother. They are supported by twin tailed mermaids, which are also known as Melusine or the Sirena and can symbolise a traveller between two worlds. The owner wished to sell them as they did not have the space to display them properly. Even though they have minor losses and a few old repairs, the decision to purchase them was an easy one to make, as they are so attractive and exquisitely carved. The wall brackets probably originate from the Black Forest region, or possibly Austria or Central Italy. All these areas have historic associations with fine lime (linden wood) carving. These highly decorative walls mounted carved figures are robust enough to still be used as originally intended. As you can see both mermaids hold up a small circular table (detachable) that can be used to support and display, amongst other things, a decorative candlestick or a trailing plant. They are being sold as seen, however, we can quote for and undertake a certain amount of restoration if directed. Two wall fixing are supplied with the brackets which snugly slot into their original supports. Measurements - 27 cm deep x 58 cm high x 22.5 cm wide
